Jon won the Stampede!
Jon and the boys after the big win. |
So, as we all know, Jon has been an avid race car fan for, well, ever. And the last couple of years, he has been racing himself. (I call it his quarter life crisis, but whatever...) He only does this pretty minimally, per racecar driving standards. He "shares" his car with a good friend of his who also has a full time job, a wife, and lots of little kiddos to entertain. So, he races a few times a month.
Well, anyway, this year, the car has been getting faster and faster. He won another feature race earlier in the season. The Stockcar Stampede is the big year-end race (a huge deal for those in the "life"). Well, a few weeks prior to the race, I was giving him a hard time because of some money he had spent on springs for the car. He told me - "Well, I'm going to win the Stampede." "Uh huh" said I, as I rolled my eyes and walked away.
Well, what do you know?! He did! He won the Stockcar Stampede! And we were all there to see it. Well, except for Etta, because she fell asleep in the stroller. But the boys and I saw it all. The boys were cheering like crazy. I was pacing back and forth, thinking to myself "Oh, Jon, don't mess it up!!" He started in 8th place. He made it to the front row pretty quickly (I think the paper said by lap 8 or 9), and had one big contender he held off for the rest of the race. It was an exciting race to watch (if it hadn't been my husband laying his heart on the line for the win...).
I have to say - Jon has loved racing as long as I've known him. I've always been quite indifferent to the whole thing. But after seeing a few big wins, and how exciting it is for him and the boys, I might just buy into this a bit. A bit! I'm not going to be out there scrapping mud or anything like that. But I will cheer my loudest :). I'm so proud of you, Jon!!
